In addition to what I will show you here, it will help to read a few books on resume' preparation to get a balanced view of the variety of styles that can be used. After seeing what I typically do and what the books have to offer, you may develop your own style. You could also have a professional resume' service prepare it for you from a cost of $60 to $350 a crack. I've gone both routs and have found it to be a learning experience to say the least.

After going the resume' preparation service rout, I found myself dissatisfied with the quality of product and so took it upon myself to develop my own resume'. What you will see on the following pages is a culmination of what I have read in books and from what I have seen on other résumé's. This may not be the best resume' you've ever read but, it is considerably better than what many professional services will generate for you. I know because I've seen many résumé's in my time due to the fact that I've had to screen applicants for job positions and I owned a resume' preparation business myself. I had four locations. One in our nation's capital and three in the city where I live, so I know what I'm talking about.

RESUMES' CAN VARY FROM FLAGRANTLY BOASTFUL TO A POINT WHERE THE READER MAY FIND THEMSELVES ASKING "WHERE'S THE BEEF?" SO MAKE IT STAND OUT BUT DON'T BRAG. IT'S A FINE LINE TO WALK AND REQUIRES SOME EXPERIMENTATION.

THIS IS THE RESULT;

Re: (Possible openings or advertised position)

Dear (Mr. or Ms. or Miss or Mrs So and So.  know who your audience is.);

Please accept my resume' for the position advertised.  I am presently seeking a technical, operating and, or supervisory position.

My qualifications include eight years of experience as an Operator in the oil and gas industry and a Second Class Inter state Stationary Engineer Certificate.  I am motivated, and a self starter. In my role as Shift Engineer I am responsible for the safe operation of a First Class Power / High Pressure Steam Plant, Refinery Control Room with Digital Control Systems, Process area, Tank Farm, contractor operated Barreling and Marine Facilities, as well as assigning maintenance tasks to various departments.

(If you are starting out in this career and have no technical background then simply put that you have just recently graduated from XYZ Technical Institute with training in the areas mentioned earlier in my report to you that you will have covered if you acquire your first [fourth class] diploma.  That should be enough to impress most who will read your resume'.  Hopefully the individual who is reading your resume' knows what a Stationary Engineer or a P.E.T. is.)

As you will see from my work history (or training) I have a significantly diversified background, able to adapt to any task at hand.  I'm certain my steam, utilities, process and supervisory background will be an asset to you.

I presently work a 14 day duty cycle and twelve hour shifts in the Arctic.  I look forward to meeting with you to discuss a Team Player (they like this kind of talk, so put it in there) position in greater detail.  I can be contacted at 555-487-8973 (Home) or 555-481-3174 (Home Fax) if you require additional information.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

(Your first and last names with your middle initial.)

Enclosure

    (If your background is not industrial then, expand on what you have done that may be of value to your potential employer. Often any kind of supervisory work is of value. Any achievements personally or while working with an employer are of significance.)

    KEY POINTS:

    • MAKE IT SHORT, SWEAT AND POWERFUL.  GOOD FORMATTING MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN TERMS OF PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATION AND READABILITY.  KEEP IT CLEAN LOOKING.
    • IN YOUR RESUME' INDICATE ALL PERTINENT INFORMATION THAT MAY RELATE TO THE POSITION APPLIED FOR.
    • IF YOU ARE SHORT ON RELATED EXPERIENCE THEN EXPAND ON YOUR EDUCATION AND TRAINING. AND LIST ALL DISCIPLINARY TRAINING:- INSTRUMENTATION, ELECTRICAL, PRIME MOVERS, WATER TREATMENT, THERMODYNAMICS, BOILER OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE, ETC. ETC.. YOU WILL HAVE A LONG LIST OF ITEMS YOU CAN ITEMIZE THAT WILL PERTAIN TO THE POSITION APPLIED FOR SO EXPLOIT IT TO THE LIMIT. YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOOSE AND EVERYTHING TO GAIN. YOUR EDUCATION AND OR TECHNICAL TRAINING MAYBE THE ONE UNIQUE THING THAT STANDS OUT FROM THE REST OF THE CROWD AND MAY WIN YOU THE JOB YOU ARE COMPETING FOR. CHANCES ARE IT WILL IMPRESS THE BAGEEPERS OUT OF ANY ONE WHO IS READING IT BECAUSE THEY PROBABLY NEVER HEARD OF P.E.T. or Stationary Engineers BEFORE. SO MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS LIST TOPICS OF STUDY AS IT RELATES TO THE POSITION APPLIED FOR.
    • ALWAYS DO A LITTLE RESEARCH ON THE EMPLOYER YOU WANT TO WORK FOR SO YOU CAN SEE WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE SO YOU CAN RELATE SUBJECTS OF STUDY TO EQUIPMENT OR PROCESSES THE EMPLOYER MAY HAVE FOR YOU TO OPERATE.
    • BE CREATIVE, ACCURATE, CONFIDENT AND TO THE POINT. YOU SHOULD HAVE A ONE PAGE COVER PAGE AND NO MORE THAN TWO PAGES EXPLAINING PAST WORK EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING. HAVE THE PRINT LARGE ENOUGH AND SPACED WELL ENOUGH SO IT IS EASY TO READ. HAVE IT LAID OUT SO IT APPEARS WELL ORGANIZED AND ITEMS ARE NOT DIFFICULT TO FIND FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES. A LARGE NUMBER OF RÉSUMÉ'S GET TURFFED BECAUSE THEY ARE DIFFICULT TO READ, POORLY LAID OUT OR TOO LONG.
    • IF YOU ARE GOING TO PREPARE YOUR OWN RESUME' DO YOUR BEST TO INSURE IT IS TYPE WRITTEN. THIS WAY IT PRESENTS A PROFESSIONAL IMAGE. IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A PERSONAL COMPUTER AND PRINTER, USE IT. IT WILL SAVE YOU LOTS OF TIME IN EDITING ARRANGEMENTS AS YOU MAY WANT TO ALTER YOUR RESUME' FOR DIFFERENT EMPLOYERS YOU APPROACH.

    If you have limited industrial experience or none at all you may put your education before your work experience in an effort to catch their eye first. the variety of training may very well tantalize them beyond what your background experience is. Otherwise they may see you have no experience related background and put your résumé' in the junk pile. So if your diploma is your strongest point, put it out front. let it be your billboard. Itemize in point form rather than bunch them all together in a paragraph. Highlight the training items that may be associated with what background they may have mentioned in their advertisement if they had one and mentioned what they were looking for.

    EXAMPLE:

    • REFRIGERATION {SCREW TYPE COMPRESSORS, AMMONIA AND CARBON DIOXIDE SYSTEMS}
